At the time of the new birth, a person receives Christ in them, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27), which is the gift of holy spirit. The gift of holy spirit is inherent spiritual ability that we have the authority and right to put into operation.
The gift of holy spirit was first made available on the day of Pentecost, ten days after Jesus Christ’s ascension. Before his ascension, Jesus Christ spoke to his apostles of the gift of holy spirit.
Acts 1:4,5:
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
The words “Holy Ghost” in verse 5 are translated from the Greek words pneuma hagion, which are better translated “holy spirit” and refer to the gift of holy spirit the apostles would receive at some future point in time. In Acts 1:4 Jesus Christ referred to the gift of holy spirit as the “promise of the Father.” These words are also recorded in the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 24:49:
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
We can see that the receiving of the gift of holy spirit is equal to “the promise of the Father,” which is “power from on high.”
This power from on high was first received by the apostles on the day of Pentecost, according to Acts, chapter 2.
Acts 2:1-4:
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost [holy spirit], and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit [God] gave them utterance.
Then Peter instructed the others present what they must do to receive the gift of holy spirit—power from on high.
Acts 2:38,39:
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost [Holy Spirit, God].
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
In verse 38, to “repent” is not to confess our sins but to confess the savior from sin, Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9). Since the day of Pentecost, the gift of holy spirit has been available to anyone who carries out Romans 10:9 and becomes born again.
Once a person receives the gift of holy spirit, he has the authority and right to exercise this inherent power. The born-again believer can now receive information from God by His gift of holy spirit. He has access to the power of God (Ephesians 3:20).
We were given great ability when we received the inherent power of holy spirit. When we take action on this inherent power, we see the manifestations of the spirit in the senses world. The nine manifestations of this one gift of holy spirit are speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, word of knowledge, word of wisdom, discerning of spirits, faith (believing), workings of miracles, and gifts of healings (I Corinthians 12:7-10). That is power in manifestation.
As born-again believers we have received the gift of holy spirit, power from on high, which is Christ in us. We have the authority and right to exercise that inherent power by operating all nine manifestations of that one gift. Right now we can manifest power from on high!
